      <image:title>old-growth redwood jewelry chest - pop top</image:title>
      <image:caption>I glued it up as a closed box, then cut the lid off on the table saw with a high fence. Tear-out was a concern but using blocks on the underside of the cut, and a line of masking tape along the inside of the box helped to minimize it.   </image:caption>

      <image:title>old-growth redwood jewelry chest - aromatic cedar</image:title>
      <image:caption>I carefully fit the aromatic cedar (not salvaged) to the inside of the box and tapered it from bottom to top just enough so that the top would go on easy and snug up as it seated.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/526b14bfe4b07233cf89991c/1383639518836-RYXCAVH4SFWY2HWARZTT/092.JPG</image:loc>
      <image:title>old-growth redwood jewelry chest - two tone</image:title>
      <image:caption>The wood for the top, bottom and sides came from the board I salvaged in Glen Park, and the legs and handles came from another board, bought from a salvage yard, thus the different shades.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/526b14bfe4b07233cf89991c/1383639526555-2SFE17Z5G3BWUNRPCZ9Q/093.JPG</image:loc>
      <image:title>old-growth redwood jewelry chest - lines</image:title>
      <image:caption>I eased the edge along the sides a fair amount to make that horizontal line more pronounced, and left the edges on the leg cuts relatively hard to accent the vertical lines. </image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/526b14bfe4b07233cf89991c/1383639608736-JGIE4RY7G0FUFVSMUJPW/103.JPG</image:loc>
      <image:title>old-growth redwood jewelry chest - invisible bookmatch</image:title>
      <image:caption>The top and bottom were bookmatched just to make the pieces wide enough, although with the perfectly quartersawn grain it only shows as two slightly darker symmetrical stripes.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>old-growth redwood jewelry chest - curves</image:title>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/526b14bfe4b07233cf89991c/1383639634741-DH65QZW8HPDBPLAC93Q5/102.JPG</image:loc>
      <image:title>old-growth redwood jewelry chest - done and finished</image:title>
      <image:caption>I used a wipe-on oil varnish blend on the outside, followed by wax, and left the inside unfinished so the aromatic cedar could do its work. I call it a jewelry chest just because of the size; as is sometimes the case with my designs, it was made without a prescribed end-use in mind.</image:caption>

      <image:title>router jig bench - previous life</image:title>
      <image:caption>I guess I failed to take a picture of the jig in use, but here it is perched on the work. The big logs were left intentionally imperfect in terms of flatness and square, but to give it a relatively flat even top surface I flipped them upside down on my bench (with lots of help) and built the jig to reference the flat bench top as I cut the grooves for the steel bases.</image:caption>

      <image:title>frustum dining table - view from the bottom</image:title>
      <image:caption>I started with a top and bottom circle cut on the bandsaw with a tilted jig to get the angle. I connected the circles with an x up the middle to transfer the load directly downward and eight additional ribs around the outside.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>frustum dining table - lid</image:title>
      <image:caption>I cut a section out of the bottom circle to allow access, so I could screw through the top circle into the the top frustum to make the hourglass</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/526b14bfe4b07233cf89991c/1383116515498-MTIICS34QJC9IUU59PRW/715+196.JPG</image:loc>
      <image:title>frustum dining table - top frustum</image:title>
      <image:caption>I used a similar method for the top one, this time using 16 ribs radiating out from a central column. though the ribs appear short in both dimensions, by the fourth layer of 1/8" balsa ply it will be pretty much spot on.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/526b14bfe4b07233cf89991c/1383119223187-EMYJBH7V4CKBIUNT1TRK/7seventeen+003.JPG</image:loc>
      <image:title>frustum dining table - with one layer of skin</image:title>
      <image:caption>skinning this one was trickier, as the balsa ply really only wants to bend across one dimension and I was forcing it to contort across several. This photo is a good look at how it would bend fine up the center of each slice (4 per layer) but towards the ends it would fight back and try to buckle. The obvious solution would be to break it into smaller slices but at the cost of more time and materials I decided to just go with it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>frustum dining table - with all four layers</image:title>
      <image:caption>clear view of the four "slice" layout. I staggered the seams on each layer to keep the curve as smooth as possible. rather than trying to taper the last layer down to nothing I ended it short, and used bondo to finish the curve.</image:caption>

      <image:title>frustum dining table - veneering</image:title>
      <image:caption>here you can see the purple bondo line fairing out that taper. because the top (big) circle was made from 1/2" MDF and the final edge profile was 1/4" there was a slight ridge which I carefully beltsanded fair. a little about veneering this odd shape</image:caption>

      <image:title>twin peaks craft room - first scribe</image:title>
      <image:caption>Scribing is basically tracing the shape of the wall onto your work, and then cutting that line to ensure a clean fit regardless of the flatness or squareness of the wall.</image:caption>

      <image:title>twin peaks craft room - removable panel</image:title>
      <image:caption>To make this scribe I made the entire panel (left side of screen) removable, so that I could secure the cabinet in place, make the scribe, then fasten the panel back in place with screws through the inside of the cabinet. As you can see there's no gaps, thanks largely to a liberal amount of white caulk.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The two lengths of counter top were joined in place using dogbones, basically a fixed-nut and bolt setup that can be tightened from below. Then it was scribed, pulled off the wall and cut, and pushed back into place where it was fastened from below to the cabinets and cleats on the walls, here obstructed by a white modesty panel.</image:caption>

The front of the recessed box was left open to accommodate a knee-operated lever and the cord to the foot pedal. To the left, a powerstrip mounted upside down with its cord running along the underside of the counter and through a hole in the modesty panel to the obscured outlet behind it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>three-tiered nightstands - dark finish</image:title>

      <image:title>three-tiered nightstands - fully breakdownable</image:title>
      <image:caption>Our clients love to tinker with the design... often right up until the moment it leaves the shop. I've learned the hard way to use screws without glue whenever I can get away with it. These nightstands break down to five components each screwed from below into the tier above it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>three-tiered nightstands - drawers</image:title>
      <image:caption>with such a small box to fit a drawer in this would have been a good spot to use old-fashioned hardwood runners, but someone up the chain called out side-mount hardware so that's what I did.</image:caption>

      <image:title>three-tiered nightstands - removable bottom</image:title>
      <image:caption>In order to make the hardware accessible, I made part of the bottom of the box removable. To make up for the weakened structure I added a vertical block in the drawer box as close to the center as I could without shrinking the drawer size too much.</image:caption>

      <image:title>claro dining table - more claro</image:title>
      <image:caption>another look at the bookmatched slab top, really the standout feature of this table. I also like the 1/2" gap running down the middle and the squared ends adding a little geometry to balance out the natural curve of the live edge.</image:caption>

      <image:title>claro dining table - black walnut base</image:title>
      <image:caption>The base was done in 16/4 solid black walnut, stained to match the top. The claro slabs were thankfully unstained, given a close-to-the-surface satin clear coat, almost looks like danish oil. My favorite.</image:caption>

      <image:title>claro dining table - dealing with big slabs</image:title>
      <image:caption>there's a lot of ways I could have handled the rip cuts on these 3" thick slabs but I think what I did was route a groove with a long straight-edge, jigsaw close to the line, flip it and route the rest of the way with a bottom-bearing bit, if that means anything to you. The crosscuts I did with this huge circular saw.</image:caption>

      <image:title>claro dining table - challenging mortise</image:title>
      <image:caption>These custom steel brackets had to be mortised into the tops of the bases. They were similar but not identical so I got close with router templates and finished with those chisels in the background</image:caption>
